Procedure Coding Investigation

The Health Systems and Policy department of BHF in late 2006 commissioned Actuarial & Insurance Solutions (AIS) of Deloitte, together with Dr Mark Ferreira (independent consultant) to conduct an investigation into procedural coding in South Africa. The study seeks to:

  • evaluate the current procedural coding systems used in South Africa;
  • discuss the concept of DRGs in the context of procedural coding;
  • evaluate the need for, and impact of, adopting and alternative coding system in South Africa;
  • and in the process evaluate international procedural coding systems, and the viability of such coding systems in a South African context.
