Welcome to GEMS Symposium 2021 – Healthcare 2021 and Beyond
We are pleased to announce the new date for the virtual GEMS Symposium Series and would like to invite you to participate in the first session, which takes place on Thursday, 13 May 2021 from 08:30 to 13:00.
Because of the current global situation, GEMS will host the first ever virtual symposium bringing together partners, key actors and policymakers in healthcare to join them in discussions that will facilitate the advancement of healthcare in South Africa. The GEMS virtual symposium will initiate a dialogue with regards to the ongoing advancement of healthcare in the region.
The theme for the four-part series is titled ‘Healthcare 2021 and beyond; the focus will be on what healthcare will look like in 2021 and beyond. Each series will have a specific theme.

Theme: Achieving herd immunity – Leaving no-one behind
To achieve herd immunity, 70% of the world’s population needs to be immune to the coronavirus.
Since December 2020, many countries around the world have approved and started deploying the COVID-19 vaccine to millions. Israel, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates have emerged as champions in the vaccination race, reaching more of their populations than almost any other country. In South Africa it is said that 65% of the adult population needs to be vaccinated the big question is ‘What can we learn from other countries to ensure effective rollout of the vaccination. that South Africa rolls out the vaccination effectively to reach herd immunity.
In this session, a panel of value chain experts will discuss hurdles, lessons learned and solutions to vaccine roll-out and distribution in South Africa.
